Frances Torivio ~ Acoma Pueblo [ 1905 ~ 2001 ]
Acoma Parrot Design Jar by Frances Torivio ca. 1991
Dimensions: 5.75" x 7" diameter
Frances P. Torivio (1905 - 2001) was one of the important matriarchs of Acoma Pueblo, mentoring many of todays Acoma potters. She was a sister of Lolita Concho and the mother of Lilly Salvador and Wanda Aragon. We purchased this piece from Francis at Santa Fe Indian Market in 1991. She was still attending the SFIM in 2001 at the grand age of 96. She used the typical Acoma clay with details in orange and black. The piece is signed by the artist.
Susie Youvella ~ Hopi Pueblo
Traditional Hopi Pueblo Wedding Vase by Susie Youvella ca. 1991
This lovely polychrome wedding vase by the late Susie Youvella (d. 1990's) from the Hopi reservation measures 9.25" high x 5" wide.
Susie Youvella was a marvelous potter and routinely made the walls of her vessels the thinnest possible. Susie was a member of the Kachina Clan and lived atop First Mesa in the village of Sichomovi. She was the mother of Hopi potter Wallace Youvella, who with his wife Iris Nampeyo, has won many awards for their creative pottery pieces. Susie was the granddaughter of Yellow Light, the first Hopi silversmith. The piece is signed by the artist.
