Guardian of the West...the bear is associated with great strength, power, healing and self-knowledge. He is the great protector...the "sacred bear". He is a spiritual guide and also carries within him supernatural powers. ... The meaning of the Heartline symbol was to signify life force.
Stewart Quandelacy is one of the sons of the late Ellen Quandelacy who learned the art of carving from her father, Johnny Quam. Stewart is best known for his Medicine Bear carvings and uniquely stylized turnaround bears. He is one of the most widely collected Zuni carvers today. Stewart also originated the Zig-zag heart-line which this beautiful piece features. His wife, Priscilla Lasiloo, whom is also a talented carver, works with Stewart on the inlay work for the heart-line and eyes, as well as, the finishing and polishing of each carving. The Quandelacy family's artistry has done a great deal to set the standard for contemporary fetish carving and Stewart's carvings are some of the most widely collected Zuni carvings today!
